Disposable email vs email alias
A disposable address is a separate inbox you read and throw away. An email alias is a stand-in address that forwards mail to your real inbox. Use disposable email for one-off sign-ups and an alias for accounts you keep but do not want tied to your real address.
Side by side
| Disposable email (temp mail) | Email alias | |
|---|---|---|
| Account needed | No | Yes, with the alias provider |
| Where mail goes | A separate inbox you open in the app or site | Forwarded to your real inbox |
| Who can read it | Anyone who knows the address | Only you |
| Reply | Usually not | Often yes, through the alias |
| How long it lasts | Messages expire (12 hours in TempMail) | Until you turn the alias off |
| Setup time | None; open and copy | Create an account, then each alias |

Pick disposable email when
- You need one code or link and will never log in again
- You do not want to create yet another account to stay private
- You are on someone else's device, or testing your own sign-up form
Pick an alias when
- You will keep the account and may need password resets or receipts
- You want to see which company leaked or sold your address
- The site blocks disposable domains
What about plus addressing?
Gmail and some other providers deliver you+shop@gmail.com to you@gmail.com. It is handy for filtering, but it hides nothing: anyone can remove the part after the plus sign and see your real address.
Use your real email when
Banking, government, work and your main accounts should use an address you control for years. See is temp mail safe for the full list, or start with what temp mail is.
